Active and Safe Routes to School - Calgary

20221214 Scenic Acres Walkabout 0018

The Active & Safe Routes to School program, in collaboration with the City of Calgary, is a comprehensive initiative designed to promote the use of active and sustainable modes of transportation among students while addressing persistent transportation and safety challenges in school zones. This program aims to not only increase the number of students walking, cycling, and using other active means to get to and from school but also to create safer and more efficient environments around schools for everyone involved. By implementing targeted strategies and working closely with schools, parents, and the community, Active & Safe Routes to School strives to create a safer, healthier, and more sustainable transportation culture within school areas.

Ever Active Schools provides year-long, tailored support to help schools foster a community culture that promotes active travel. By collaborating with schools and implementing Green Communities Canada's School Travel Planning process, the program empowers students to advocate for active transportation through a focused 4-day, 90-minute-per-day in-school residency. During this residency, students participate in leadership development, data collection, priority issue identification, and action planning. Additionally, Ever Active Schools partners with school leaders to conduct community walkabouts, evaluating challenges and opportunities for improving active travel. With these insights, each school develops a customized action plan designed to enhance safety and encourage active transportation.

Since the project was initiated in 2019, Ever Active Schools in partnership with the City of Calgary has implemented the Active & Safe Routes to School project at 50 schools across Calgary. This school year, we are looking forward to launching the program at 10 more schools across Calgary.
