A Sneak Peek: Grades 7-9 Resource Suite

Written by Chesa Peter

Resource development is part of Ever Active’s roots and remains a key way we support educators today. We know there is both a sense of lack and overwhelm when it comes to accessing meaningful, engaging, and curriculum-aligned resources. It can feel like there is both too much and too little available, and sorting through everything takes precious time.

Recently, the Resource Circle at Ever Active has been working to create a suite of resources connected to Alberta’s Physical Education and Wellness curriculum. We aim to design materials that are flexible, practical, and responsive to the realities of today’s classrooms. Resources that can be easily picked up, adapted, and integrated in ways that make sense for both educators and students. These resources are being developed in both English and French to better support classrooms across the province and beyond. Physical Education, Health and Wellness Education share many common threads across regions, including a focus on active living, fundamental movement skills, mental well-being, and healthy relationships.

While much of our recent work has focused on K to 6, we are excited to share a sneak peek of what is coming next for Grades 7 to 9.

A Sneak Peek: Grades 7 to 9 Resource Suite

Flexible, Plug and Play Resources
Adaptable resources aligned with key outcomes in Physical Education and Wellness. These can stand alone or be woven into existing units, making them easy to integrate into busy classrooms.

For example, Wellness Word of the Week.
This interactive, ready-to-use slide deck introduces 36 essential health and wellness vocabulary terms, one for each week of the school year, to build student understanding of key concepts. Each weekly focus includes a brief definition, a literacy-based word game, a movement or group activity, and a reflective prompt.

Student Centred Learning Experiences
Resources that prioritize student voice, reflection, and choice. These resources encourage learners to explore topics like personal wellness, goal setting, and decision-making in ways that feel meaningful to them.

For example, the PE and Wellness Student Journal.
Journaling is a widely recognized practice for self-reflection, tracking growth, managing stress, fostering creativity, and strengthening communication skills. It is used across subject areas, from Language Arts to Science, and often becomes a lifelong tool for well-being.

So what better place to practice journalling than in Physical Education and Wellness? At Ever Active, we see journaling as a powerful tool in these spaces for both students and teachers.

As schools across Alberta implement the new Grades 7 to 9 Physical Education and Wellness curriculum, learning is happening in both the classroom and the gymnasium, often shared between teachers. The PE and Wellness Student Journal is designed to act as a bridge between concepts, spaces, and educators, a place for students to connect what they are learning to their everyday lives.

Cross-Curricular Connections
Intentional opportunities to connect learning across subject areas, particularly with Career Education and Financial Literacy. These resources support competencies such as critical thinking, planning, and personal responsibility.

For example, Lead the Way: Building Your Leadership Toolkit.
This is an online course designed to give middle school students the opportunity to explore their own unique leadership style while building a practical toolkit of skills. While the content is delivered online, there are opportunities to come together as a class to move, learn, and play.

Ready to Use Facilitation Supports
All resources include discussion prompts, reflection questions, and printable materials designed to make facilitation smoother and more engaging, whether you are new to the subject area or looking to deepen your practice.

Stay Tuned

We are excited about what is ahead and look forward to sharing more in the coming months. If you are interested in piloting or providing feedback on our Grades 7 to 9 resources, we would love to connect. Please email resources@everactive.org.

Together, we can continue to create learning experiences that support the whole student, making wellness not just a subject, but a meaningful part of everyday school life.
